Time to start some pre-relay hype.
Emily Kemp will be on the WOC Studio live today.
6pm Sweden, noon in Ottawa.
Too bad they spelt her name wrong.
She was Emily Camp for a bit of the Live Blog. I imagine this will change going forward!
Very interesting tactics in the Men's race; SUI, NOR, SWE, FRA, GBR, FIN, LAT, UKR, EST, AUT are all putting their best runner on leg 2.
No one wants to miss the break it seems...
Shit that is going to be an exciting 2nd leg
Yeah, Canada going with old school tactics, but won/lost in the woods regardless. This Godman's first race for Canada?
TV has started - it looks like really open forest
Same commentary team :(
If you want to let the commentator how bad he is, here's his twitter: @HughDan1956
Does anyone have GPS tracking working?
No, are the hiding it until last leg?
Yes, I do. Did you select Leg 1 for the GPS tracking?
Yes, got it working now, I guess they only just turned it on.
Use the GPS[whatever] checkbox then HTML option... cleaner interface than the one that doesn't work anyway
aaaand it's carnage!!!
great gaffel, funny that it's the easy one that people are missing
SWE gonna be 90s down, like last year...
Russia, France,... all had to go back
EST still lost.... UKR also missed.... lots of good teams messig up so early
USA ahead of Sweden at control 3! Go ebone! Serious massacre at control 2.
I think it might not affect the next legs as much, as the runners will be spread out and navigating independently,
next legs as in 2nd and 3rd runners, not controls :)
The green around 2-4 looks tricky. Carl Godager Kaas is crushing it.
It looks like a great area to be out in front, dong your own thing and forcing your own
First time I've listened to the commentary. Katherine's doing a good job.
Live camera footage is excellent, but I wonder if having a camera man following Kaas makes it easier for Fabian to catch sight of him.
Its much better for the relay where their reactive style works better.
Interesting split in route choice for the long leg
Yes, loving the dual go-pros
I think anything but that straight line is gonna lose time
Yeah, alternatives are both longer and have more climb. AUS/NZL/GER taking an odd route.
For anyone trying to understand Nixon:
Portugal having an adventure to 10?
The race for bronze is going to be very exciting
The 2nd leg runners can see the map !!?
How can the change-over runners be allowed to see the map on the screen?
Just a thought - why don't they inset the gps in one corner of the screen?
Because they aren't as clever as you
You can make that work by using two windows and splitting the screen. Multiple monitors is also an excellent solution.
No one wants to miss the break it seems...
Well, everyone bar Norway missed it even before it got to 2nd leg.
Thierry on an interesting route to 2.
Not sure how much value a go-pro shot of an orienteer's back gives to the non-orienteer
Got multiple monitors now, not while I was making breakfast!
Lundanes is a locomotive.
What, can only run on tracks? ;)
"Hey, Mats - is this the lead?"
My favourite quote of all time
GBR running well. I'm really hoping Thierry can pick off the human meat streamer to put France in contention.
Little wobble from Hector, but he's back on it. Solid start for somone who was drafted in last minute
CZE and DEN going walkies....
I'll just keep the British slang wikipedia page open.
You're a bright guy Ian. You can manage walkies!
What is that area that is all brown on the map ?
Quarry and motorbike track by the looks of it
Hector going to have some illustrious company soon
At tiomila that usually means open dirt. Not sure what it is here. gross when wet.
A Bayesian approach works well with Nixon, because the likelihood that he's saying something positive is small. :)
Negative prior expectation! Love it.
If I'm using positive language, it'll be sarcastic
Poor Hubmann and Lundanes - run a relay, but never see anyone. Forever alone.
I'd rather see no one that see about 15 people like Thierry and Gustav!!!
Ross running with Portugal, perhaps 2.5 minutes behind Eric Kemp!
Wow, what happened to Russia?
Interesting route from Simon to #7
Someone did that on leg1 too, better than what BLR have just done...
I think Khramov had a rough #2 on the first leg.
Thierry really hates the green!
What is he doing Bruce I can't get gps to work
Czech Republic on another walkies.
Sedivy is having a shitemare!
(How you like that one Ian?)
Nice try, but you have to go/going/gone walkies
If we turned "God Save The Queen" into a patriotic song, we can bastardize "walkies."
Paraphrased from the Olympics - Some runner makes a two minute mistake in the WOC Relay. Me, eating ice cream on my couch: "What a loser."
Hector needs to hold the wheel
Ice cream for breakfast Ian?!?
It's mostly a metaphor. Hold the wheel
? (not intended srsly)
Surely the manbun slows him down.
*3 second gap*
"Bergman clearly into the bronze medal position"
GBR and Finland only have 6.5 km to make up those 5m. They have no chance.
Ross dropped Portugal like a bad habit. Manbun!
Who's our third leg Mark?
GG tested his ankle, but it wasn't up to it unfortunately. A tough, but sensible decision.
He's going to need the race of his life!
Looks like Bergman has gone "clearly" into 5th position...
Yeah, saw GG's post on Facebook. Tough but good choice.
*Lundanes runs through the TV control wheezing like an asthmatic*
"And this is a stroll in the park for Lundanes with his substantial lead."
Is the commentary a long way behind the gps or is it just my tv?
USA might see Canada as a result!
Just your TV, mine is about 30s back as well
Ross missing 8!!! :'( With great determination.
Second year in a row that GBR are in a fight for a medal, and looking good for a podium. Very impressive stuff.
I can't stand to watch this ;-(
Looks like Gustav blew that massive gap he had at the run through
Brutal; Ross was within about 50m of Canada when he turned away. So close!
Fantastic from Hector. Calm and collected amongst the big guys.
No doubt Hector is planning on building an insurmountable 5s lead on Finland.
Bloody annoying that GPS tracking for a leg is switched off as soon as the next leg starts (and its tracking starts). Or is this just happening to me?
Just you, try using the GPS Seuranta link, it's stays live for ages
Nice to see it's straight running from 8 to the finish
Kyburz closing to within 1 minute of Magne Daily (sic)!!!
Yep, that works - as an IT guy need to learn how a checkbox works...
Maybe I saw wrong, but it looked like William Lind took the map and Bergman didn't even touch it.
SWE, FIN, GBR all on same first gaffel...
Ross going Norway to control 9.
Did Kyburz climb the fence?
I thought he went through the gap, but it's crossable under ISOM.
According to GPS tail, yes.
The number of people who don't understand ISOM it too damn high!
1st leg swiss runner lost time there, maybe he passed on a message to just climb it
@Nixon - and your point is ?
LOL one of the Go Pro guys faceplanted. Hysterical.
What? That was my point. Too many people don't understand ISOM. We had it in the long with the wide river channel as well.
I just didn't see how that was relevant to anything
Curious - Sweden dropping far to the south out of 8; that could be costly.
It was relevant to the fence being questioned a few times today...
I just wondered if it slowed him down.
Me too esp. having seen first leg runners slow in that area, maybe crossing isn't that obvious and fence is high but do-able
Yeah, in fairness I don't think anyone has made any mention of disqualification. Unlike William Lind's BLATANT violation grabbing the map at the start of his leg.
Wouldn't like to be in that 3-6th pack
Here's a question:
Doping offences can disqualify an athlete many years after a race. What if CCTV footage materialised after a sprint event, showing an athlete breaking a forbidden boundary? Can you be DSQ for that type of cheating afterwards?
I hope they like pain. Giacomo getting a shoutout!
In rogaining, apparently so.
Lind looks like he has a guilty conscience
It's just strange that at IOF events you have 15 minutes to make a protest. Unless it's doping. But cheating is cheating.
Sprint is the only likely time this would occour
Huge mistake by Tranchand, blowing all chances of catching up FIN/GBR, visible on the GPS, they are not picking that up on TV...
That would be 15 minutes while your team manager is in quarantine...
... They did now, maybe they are reading this thread...
The pressure situation Magna Dailly finds himself in must be intense.
that is a horrendous route choice
He missed in the control circle - maybe lost confidence
Lars Lindstrom on an ipad with headphones in... I hope he's just listening to music
Hahahah - Kaas live streaming or taking a selfie as they do the victory lap.
Get SWE DSQ and we have a bronze ;)
Substantial mistake by Damian at 3. Will Giacomo catch up?
Canada trying to give USA a chance again...
That's very sporting of you, eh.
... And GBR/FIN now split up, they are not picking up that either
"Last time they got the relay gold was in 2015, congrats Norway!"
Thanks for that liveblog. Making HughDan look good.
Maverick route by FIN to #15
Fin had gone for the swim route! Pre-planned?
Was faster than it looked, the screened stuff must be slow
Leathering it down the run in!
Time to get on your mobile Nixon?
Australia v Kiwiland - winner gets two Bledisloe points
Louise running first for Canada?
Then Emma, then Emily (don't you read attackpoint?) ;-)
How come RUS were DSQ last year?
oh what, the women don't get to go in the green?!?!
I like Katerhine struggling to say that the women's course isn't easier.
Forne v Keely.
Mmmm, we may struggle.
Portugal catching up Canada, and Belgium catching up America.
@Nixon - Russian TM was stuck in quarantine and couldn't protest.
What a great system we have...
New Zealand by 3 seconds even without Richie McCaw
#6 is very interesting, left for D, right for F ???
@Nixon. Indeed. Try missing an epunch by half that distance and see what happens...
Official results for Sprint Relay
1. Natalia Gemperle mispunched mispunched
Anyone guessing on best route for E ?
Split go pro with live GPS in middle would be great
50/50 for E it seems, and don't take SWE's wide exit to go high
USA leading Anglophone subcomp
That's what I (re) typed. You all look the same to us :)
Interesting selection from CAN, I'd put Emily on 1st leg
Last leg is a little longer I think which may be why she got it.
It's only a few hundred meters longer though
My video is dead. Anyone else?
Nice run by Sam. Go Alex!!
2:09 back for Sam...great result
Good stuff, well done USA!
Uh oh. Wonder if Latvia is going to #6.
Fun quiz time!!!
Who was the last country to do the relay double? And when?
No cheating :)
GBR and LTU not going for climbing rope route after all.
Denmark? (If I can't cheat I have to guess)
What about a triple with the Sprint - has that ever been done?
Nope. I'll give you a clue, it was a home champinships...
there has only been 3 sprint relays: SUI, DEN, DEN
Oh no - poor emma ;-(
Looks very confused
I hope she can recover okay ...
Was that two clues? Probably not, but if so SUI a few years ago would have been capable of it...
Nailed it Boris, Finland. and Norway in 1999 too.
I think it is time to give up on the commentator getting the pronunciation of the leading runner right even once in about 100 tries...
I like the fact he gets them wrong in different ways, he can't even stick on one wrong way of saying someone's name
I assume Russia and Finland have worked out they have the same forkings by this time.
And they don't notice Norway...
My bad - I thought Finland and Russia had the same forks but apparently not.
Becks - no skipping today. Much more appropriate language. Maybe they're getting better?
Lots of people have been skipping! But at least both sexes.
Wyder isn't even on my GPS tracking?!
Do the commentators have the GPS feed we're seeing or only what is shown on TV? They keep missing the misses.
She's just gone straight over the hill at 2 and into the green... I can only think she thought that was the first hill with the long crag, and the green was the flat area in between?
Really appreciating the commentary as I'm on the road & can't watch the video, so you guys are my connection to a the action!
Tove, Wyder, Gemperle, Indrakova, all making big mistakes on 2 / 3. I can only assume the setting sun gets in their eyes...???
Emma finishing strong for Canada on Leg 2... might catch NZL and move up in the Anglo category...
And setting up a great final leg between AUS/USA/NZL/CAN/IRL...
(Can't believe the commentary hasn't picked up on that ;-)
Route-choice to #7 very interesting... but mistakes seem to have been even more costly in here
Amazing fitness from Wyder to close the gap to Tove on the hill out of 5
Anybody know why the Czechs have been DQed?
Kemp Machine, coming through....
If Alm sneaks bronze out of this it would be legendary
Is Denmark going to catch Finland?
Russia getting lost to the last control..
oh my god, my ears are dying, worst commentary ever
That was absolutely spectacular from Alm.
OK now the medals are decided can Emily catch both the Jo's?
"We knew the medals are going to come from the top 6, but we didn't know which top 6"...
My new favourite...
@Gordhun - Jo Sheps has 8 minutes and about 1.2km to go, should be enough for the Commy Gold
FRA now heading out to the road... very odd.
@Nixon. Yes I was just pulling a chain. But Emily started 22:51 behind the leading group and finished 23:46 behind , losing less than a minute and actually gaining time from control 11 to the finish. WOW! Great focus when the race is basically over.
I watched the exhange again. Absolutely nothing wrong there. I could blame data stream issues and compressin artifacts, but for sure artifacts were in my eyes and data sreaming issues were in my brain. Sorry for that.
Wow, at the start of the third leg, Tove and Judith running out of the arena together - a showdown of juggernauts.
Finally caught up on relay photos, here
Thanks for the AUS and NZ photos in your set.
