I swear the only thing worse than driving a truck is towing a horse float - where not only is your stopping distance huge, but your cargo will actively try to kill itself if you do anything unexpected*.

But yes, people who cut off trucks are fuckwits and deserve to have 20t of bullbar in their rear bumper.

* 'unexpected' things include:

  • accelerating

  • braking

  • turning

  • changing lanes

  • indicating (flashing lights are scary, man)

  • changing the radio station

One other thing I haven't yet got the hang of is the ability to roll around corners in 4th gear (or 5th if it's a wide corner). It just seems wrong. Plus I cannot get the hang of the clutch from 1st-4th (4th-8th I'm totally fine with), particularly taking off from a corner in 1st whilst not even using the accelerator. Oh and hey, trying to take off right at the start and stalling it in 5th gear because the switch was up, ha ha what a laugh!

My 'illness' from last week only seemed to last a day too. Makes me think it might have been hayfever but I don't get hayfever so that's a bit weird.

Heh....yeah, the difference between petrol car engines tuned for power, versus a whopping great diesel truck engine tuned entirely for torque. It feels weird and wrong doing anything at 1k RPM. :)

I'll have to reword that - I should have said I'll have the utmost respect for trucks, not necessarily their drivers. There was one young guy at the training centre today who didn't know what year he got his licence so the woman tried to help by asking what year he left school (bad idea, he looked like he didn't get much past year 7) so she tried telling him to take his birth year and add 17 - fail.

School buses aren't good to cut in front of either. Not quite in the truck weight category, but generally less competent drivers who are being distracted by 20+ screaming kids.
I hate driving in Perth.
