Sounds pretty epic! I assume you and the cows made it out alright?
Considering that you're posting on AP, I can assume you're mostly ok. If the cow is not ok, I hope you had tasty hamburger.
Yup, both the cow and my rental car made it out unblemished. Which was a relief.
It turns out that the cows go to the road in the evenings because it's warmer than the surrounding areas, then they just hang out there as a threat to motorists. If said motorists hit the cows, it's bad for the cows, good for the spare parts industry, and the driver owes the rancher the value of damages caused to the cow. That's not so dissimilar from certain parts of England, where the sheep sleep on the road for warmth, but at least the sheep are white.
It would be nice if the ranchers would put reflective jackets on the cows, which are otherwise black with black features. It all reminded me of the black spaceship in the Hitchhiker's Guide...
"Every time you try and operate these weird black controls that are labeled in black on a black background, a little black light lights up in black to let you know you’ve done it."
