Discussion: The day for it!

First official day for rockman on L plates with a licensed driver (as opposed to instructor). A little bit rusty not having driven for over 2 years all in all. Now for some lessons before his test in 2 weeks.
Hope you get some joy soon.

Oh crap, I just got shortlisted for stage 3 of the firefighter assessment (now into the final 240 of 1050 initial applicants). That puts a LOT of pressure on me to get the licence, more so given I'm off to China in a week and a half.

Bugger, I knew this China trip was going to be bad for me. Proof of HR licence needs to be submitted by Sep 27 but I'm leaving for China on the 20th so I have a week less to do it in. I should have done the two day course - would have been quicker (also a quicker path to failure)! I think if I fail the test, I have to wait seven days to resit so I only get one chance.

or you dont go to china and possibly get employment

Always an option and I did mention it to Trev when I first signed up for China. If I get the licence before then, it's a moot point. If I get culled from the aptitude test next weekend, it's also a moot point. Means I can't do HH at the rogaine though (I've already emailed the relevant people). Fortunately I'll know all this before I go so can make the decision if need be.

would love to say I would fill your spot for you if you have to bail - but that is likely to 1 get me hung drawn and quartered - and 2 no/very little chance I could go in on the back of nothing and pull it off.

Trev'll probably have someone waiting in the wings. Mind you, he did message Tash just a couple of days ago asking if she wanted to fill a spot so maybe he doesn't have anyone!

tRicky - all this if/then or if not/then... I can't stand the suspense. But just want you to know at our club meeting last night talk about 5 day ... or actually the 3 days of MTBO - they are going to be really interesting formats but part of an 8 stage series. So WHEN you win all 3 days at Christmas AND you move over to the eastern border you can go on and clean sweep. So there's some more pressure on you. PowA doesn't think you can do it... Andrew Haigh looked particularly vague when I mentioned your name - so you've got him bluffed. Mind you he came 3rd in XV at World Rogaine with his wife. He's no slouch.

What are the other five events?

Andrew Haigh is a bit clueless when it comes to national MTBO I think. We were both at the NSW champs this year. Show him my photo in the latest Aus O magazine :-) (page 41, I'd already taken my glasses off before I got to that point in the sprint so you can see the terror in my eyes)

All this would be much easier if either the ADF or AFP offered me a job and I actually moved over east but I have to keep my options open. The firefighter role would ensure I stayed in WA.

Newcastle runs a series called BOSS. It is run over the summer months mostly. Andrew Haigh molded it into its current form of a series. I THINK it is called Bike Orienteering Summer Series. Greg Bacon has a hand in the actual event format and he loves changing the challenge - like a line course + score all in one and I overheard some format of line, leaving at sometime and not being able to return - very strategic - but risky in format. Greg is always thinking of how to change things up.
Andrew may have been feigning ignorance to put me off the scent. I told him I am Tash's and your spy.

Informant. Not a spy :P

Ahh yes I know of the BOSS series. I think it actually stands for Big Old Storm Season since it always gets rained out.

Aha - you've been to Wallaroo too!

No, I just know from reading PowA's log that it's always wet plus the BOSS event that SteveO missed to do the MTB rogaine in Vic last year was flooded so he was quite happy with his decision to stay on for the extra week.

We think there are some complete bikes at the bottom of mud puddles there.

We've had years when we've had no rain/water problems. Also had an event cancelled due to heat/fire risk.

I remapped a lot of the tracks at Lone Pine Road (Pond) once and made a new track symbol of track on blue background to indicate how wet the tracks were. I don't think we should use the area for MTBO.

PowA - that'll take all the fun out of it for us non MTBO -ers!!!

I need to get fit enough to work out how to beat the Haighs in a rogaine, but it'll take some doing.
Sep 11, 2016 11:59 PM #
I need to find a teammate who'll commit more than a couple of weeks out from an event. Either that or just stick with my plan to give up the sport.
Sep 12, 2016 12:06 AM #
You mean you're not going down to Nannup for the Aust Champs this coming weekend?
Sep 12, 2016 9:31 AM #
Nope, I was scheduled for HH duties for the second event in a row but I've had to cancel that because I made it through to round 3 of firefighter recruitment and they only have three days you can do the physical testing, two of which are this weekend (the third is when I'm in China the following weekend). Lucky I didn't sign up because I would have had to bail on my teammate but the two people I asked a few months back were non-committal about it all.
