Bummer. So whats your working hypothesis? Did the ultrasound show anything? I'm surprised that it was done to check for shin splints, since my understanding is they don't even really know what shin splints are. I had some pain in that area (safe to say since I've had pain just about everywhere in the lower leg/ankle), and pt was real concerned about compartment syndrome, but on my end of it that just didn't feel like the right take on it. And it went away after a few days of soft pedaling.

I think shin splints is the 'upper respiratory infection' of the lower leg. Covers a number of ailments, but when used correctly, its when the connective muscle tissue pulls away from the tibia. Ultrasound can definitely spot that.

The ultrasound showed a lot of swelling in the fascia, some edema, some mild bursitis, and only one minor spot with tendonopothy. So the bottom line is to take it easy for a few days - the leg was sending signals to back off. Ice, topical anti-inflam, compression.

Well, that's at least double last year. I think my record won't stand for long given the amount of hobbling I did in the last mile, but nice to be a 'record holder' while it lasts... :)
