Riding by parked cars is nerve racking. A friend in grad school had both his bike and body heavily damaged by an abruptly opened door. Glad you dodged it.

Me, too.

It is the first time in years that I've been surprised by a door opening. Usually I see that possibility long before I need to react.

We should be teaching people the Dutch Reach

Good job on being alert!

I am pretty mindful of the possibility of doors being opened when I'm riding, too, or at least I think I am. For some reason, I worry/think about it much more on certain streets than on others. The more commercial, the busier the street is, the more I worry about it. In neighborhoods, not so much.

The Dutch Reach seems like a nice idea.

I think I'm pretty mindful of just about everything cars can do to cause me trouble when I'm diving. If I could change one thing, it'd be getting more drivers to pay attention to what they are doing instead of their phone.

My near-door-experience was downtown. Downtown is always a possible danger zone because you get lots of people who are visiting and who are more focused on things other than driving (like finding a parking space or looking for a restaurant).

Cell phones are killers. Seriously. I work for a life insurance company. We have the numbers.
