GuyO:
The Future Champions Cup is awarded to the nation with the top Junior Team at the North American Orienteering Championships (NAOC), an IOF-sanctioned Regional Championship event held in even years.

At NAOC 2016, USA juniors successfully defended the Cup, which they had previously won in 2014 (in 2012, the inaugural year of the competition, Canadian & USA juniors tied). Twenty-one USA juniors from diverse locations contributed to the victory, and, in recognition of their accomplishment, their names will be engraved on the Cup...

Brigitte Bordelon, USMAOC
Margaret Bowerman, DVOA
Evalin Brautigam, WCOC
Isabel Bryant, CSU
Siri Christopherson, COC
Tyra Christopherson, COC
Julia Doubson, BAOC
Austin Fowler, GAOC
Ethan Hall, NEOC
Will Hubsch, LAOC
Michael Laraia, MNOC
Thomas Laraia, MNOC
Turner Leigh, QOC
Aidan Minto, ICO
Kestrel Owens, GMOC
Todd Park, SOAR
Sarah Petersen, BAOC
Anton Salmenkylä, CSU
Caroline Sandbo, COC
Deirdre Young, HVO [added 10/12/16]

Congratulations for a job well done!

Is the actual scoring for the FC and BK Cups available somewhere?
Oct 7, 2016 5:39 AM #
GuyO:
2016 FC Cup scoring (USA / Canada)...

Middle - 116 / 79
Long - 118 / 72
Sprint - 117 / 63
Relay - 110 / 50

Overall - 461 / 264

I can't speak for the BK Cup scoring...

it would be great for future naoc weekends if the FC and BK cup points could be automatically updated on the fly to add to the spectating experience. It would also be good to have the correct info on the web page regarding the points and format of the relays as well.

Their names will be engraved on the cup? What a great idea! That is just like the National Hockey League's Stanley Cup.
Could we adopt another Stanley Cup tradition and have the winners take control of the cup for a day or so each and show it off at their school or at an orienteering event in their area?

GuyO:
The names (first initial + last name) are actually engraved on rectangular plates attached to the wooden base upon which the cup sits.

DWildfogel:
Thanks for the scores per event, Guy, but how about points per person per race, that is, a list of the results with the points attached to each finisher who scored points? And, who is in charge of the BK Cup scoring?
Oct 7, 2016 6:03 PM #
GuyO:
@DW: That level of detail is not currently in a presentable format, and would take some time to set up. I could send you a crude listing for your own use, if you wish...

I think Erin did some BK scoring calculations at NAOC, but for "official" numbers, I suggest contacting LKohn.

Love this idea. Go Bridge and the rest of the juniors!!

Are the two juniors who mispunched being left off the list on purpose?

furlong47:
Since it says it's a list of those who contributed to the victory, my guess is it's only the names of people who scored FC Cup points in at least one race.

Then should't D Young be added? She was on the USA team which added 10 points?
Oct 8, 2016 3:16 AM #
GuyO:
@origami: Furlong is correct; however, individuals can also contribute by reducing the points scored by competing individuals; an example would be if the 4th US individual (only the first 3 score points) beat the 3rd Canadian, pushing him/her to a lower placing -- and fewer points awarded.

@VM: Deirdre's team was 3rd US junior team (the 4th MP'd), and only the 1st two relay teams score; so, the only way they could have contributed would have been to reduce the score for a 2nd Canadian team -- but there was only one Canadian junior relay team.
[edit: Turns out I was mistaken about only 2 teams counting...]

@Hammer: Definitely agree that the online relay format & scoring info needs updating. My initial calculations used the original 50-30-20-10 scale; I only remembered the 70-50-40-30-20-10 scale when I reviewed the 2014 FC calcs.

Were you on the ad hoc committee that developed the rules we started using in 2012? On the BK & FC Cup thread, I asked for verification of the 70-... scale, but nobody responded.

Guy, if the basis of Dierdre not being on the cup is due to being the 3rd team, Ethan should also fall in that category as he was on her team and only did the relay. Unless, of course, he scored for an individual result in the long?
Oct 9, 2016 2:37 AM #
GuyO:
Ethan scored points on M-18 in both the Long [10] and the Sprint [8].

ahall:
Oh, well we were not aware of that (no points posted anywhere?)
Oct 9, 2016 10:42 PM #
GuyO:
Not yet.
With the outcome not in doubt, there has not been much reason to rush posting scoring details. As I told DWildfogel above, I could send you a crude listing of details for your own use/information, if you'd like.

GuyO:
It now appears that the USA's 3rd relay team DOES count in the scoring, so Deirdre Young, of HVO, was, in fact, also a contributor. The Cup is still at the engraver, so I hope her name can be added...

The need for this addition was realized when I looked at the BK Cup scoring for 2014, and saw that three relay teams from each country were included in the 70-50-40-30-20-10 scheme. (This was not apparent in the 2014 FC Cup scoring because each country only fielded 2 teams).

Once again, the apparent lack of documentation, regarding the change from gender-separate to mixed team relay competition, has reared its ugly head...
