Neat! Anna pulled two a little smaller out of Round Pond a few West Point meets ago. Really fun to see when they're babies.
Despite being small I could tell it's a snapper. :-) Very distinctive.
They are, aren't they? The ones Anna caught were the first I'd seen up close. There was a MUCH larger one at a nature center in a park we camped at - really made me think about what those little snappers become. Awesome creatures.
There is a pond in McLean Game Refuge near us that we take our grandkids to when they visit. Toss in bread bits for a while attracts some fish. After 5-10' or so, a dark shadow slowly emerges from the deep to investigate the bread. A snapper, maybe 15" across. Sometimes there has been a smaller one with it, maybe 10" across. Impressive creatures. The fish tend to stay clear.
