I know Joans dog (beagle) would have been. She is always sniffing car tires for the delicious aroma of road kill.

I think beagles just like tires. Mine always used to sniff at new tires I'd bring home from the bike shop. Once, I ordered car tires on line and, when they arrived, I rolled them (not dragged) into the back yard. The next time I let my beagle out, he hopped down the steps, stopped dead in his tracks, put his nose to the ground and went first to the gate and then followed the exact track back to the tires. How you pick up the trail of a rolling tire at a dead run, I can only imagine. It's not like any sense we possess.

Cleo will show lots of interest in the scent of larger mammals, but not so much for tires. The things dogs can smell and identify is pretty amazing.
