Hey guys - what are your thoughts on a 5-10-21km ultra long metro sprint course in Perth?

Willing to do it? Anything you think could be included to make it more fun? Any suggestions for dates or good linking maps?

Have a look at the photos on Orienteering WAs facebook page to see how our trial event worked out!

There are plenty of maps around, just look on the OWA website although they're not all listed, particularly the more recent ones.

Could we not make it the ultra long marathon metro hurdle sprint steeplechase relay course?

tRicky:
That makes for a terrible acronym.

OK how about the "SHLURMMS" (Sprint hurdle long ultra relay metro marathon steeplechase)

Put it in school holidays or on a long weekend and I'm keen (but probably nobody else will turn up)

It's too expensive to travel during school holidays.

You need to map towns on the way Fletch, that way you can drive, orienteer, drive, orienteer and make a proper orienteering road trip of it. You could continue south to Rockers, Mandurah, Lake Clifton pines, Bunbury... but then the trail goes cold I think until you hit Denmark or Mt Barker. I wonder if Annwen mapped Manjimup?

I've often thought orienteering at the Pinnacles would be fun. Even better at night.
Would be a struggle to make all the maps joon though... 400km is a lot of paper

I'd make an exception for this one and suggest that given we're in the digital age that you could use a tablet or ipad to display the relevant bit of the map as you go. Surely Juffy could map the Pinnacles remotely without even visiting the site, I mean it's just yellow with rock pillars and a few blobs of green, contours. Then we put 'Rogaining Map' on the top and if anyone's caught with a map it's all good.

Are you serious, a (WA) rogaining map with colour on it that doesn't just signify pine plantations? No-one would believe that.

The 1994 Malmalling-ish map at 1:25 000 had other colours on it (and a couple of rock surfaces).

The 2016 Carinyah map had colours on it too given I did a direct conversion from the MTBO map of the same area and just changed all the tracks and OOB areas from olive to stripey pink (which meant many people walked right through the one near the start, between the stripes).

Red Line Fever we marked the crops out of bounds with a border containing light pink. And got in trouble for doing something different, despite it being really useful. Last time we bothered making the map that much better.

Take Nothing For Granite had two(!) shades of grey, because the Landgate data happened to have vegetation boundaries and "rock surfaces" included. I dunno how much the competitors noticed, but I found them really useful for setting.
