Kudos to you for taking on something that a) matters and which b) you find difficult/unpleasant.
I did quite a bit of this for the Australian election earlier this year. I was also pretty apprehensive about it but it was a more positive experience than I expected - a lot of people didn't want to talk (you'd do well to have 10 proper conversations in a two-hour session), but out of several hundred calls I only encountered one person who was abusive.

Thanks; I really didn't do very much. I'm not a very good salesman - I find it much easier to point out the flaws and weaknesses in a product or plan than to sell it on its virtues. I was a terrible popcorn salesman as a boy scout (since apparently they are corporate), and I hated the process. It is an interesting exercise to try to engage a group of people with a product or perspective.
