Hey Graeme, as someone with a deep knowledge of the British orienteering scene, how many people would you expect to tune in for an English-language web TV broadcast of Tiomila?

Tricky question. I may be way off, but I'd say it would struggle to get much into double figures at that time of night. Probably a few more for the first leg. Most people have no interest at all, and those who do try to get over and run.

I see. That's very helpful, thank you. Trying to gauge how much interest there is globally for a dedicated English-language Tiomila stream. Sounds like not too much, from the answers I have seen. :(

Big Jon:
There will be no interest until it is up and running :-) Once there a good publicity drive might kick start some excitement.

I think that's a good point, Jon. I will try to see if I can convince the Tiomila leadership of that. Certainly, there is no building a global brand and appeal - which they want to do - without English-language commentary.

I'm not sure watching on TV is quite interesting enough - its quite slow moving. What might work better would be to encourage clubs to have a Tiomila party - like a superbowl party, to think of another sporting event that takes forever with relatively little happening so you only want to half watch the coverage. You might have some web-based O-related activities as well, and Nicola Manfredi as the halftime show, that sort of thing...

A starting point (which I'm sure you've already considered)would be to see how many people have paid to watch the non-english coverage from outside Scandinavia or English speaking countries? I certainly have for the last couple of years. The men's race happens during the day for our Antipodean friends too so there could be interest there.

Thanks Murray. Yeah, that's definitely the right starting point. I haven't seen the numbers on viewers outside of Scandinavia but will see if I can get my hands on those numbers.

I started a similar thread about potential Australian viewers on Shep's log, and there is similar pessimism about the number of viewers there as well.
