Can you do anything with 15' of snow? When will they be able to function at all? If they aren't simply quoting drift depth, how can buildings be even visible? I've just never experience anything close to that level of snow depth and so can't even visualize what the area looks like in the big picture sense.

Like this?

(Heading to Frisco/Breckinridge this weekend for snow. I suppose the n+1 rule works just as well for skis as it does for bikes and I'm up to n=2 post last trip.)

Yeah its kindof like those pics. The "Donner pass, CA" one is what those houses look like now (up by Royal Gorge). Things go back to normal surprisingly fast after the storms stop, we just have lots of big toys to handle it all. The big rotary blowers they clean up the roads with are sortof like the one in the "Lake Tahoe, CA" pic, but maybe twice as tall at the chewing end. First year I lived up here my neighbor lost three or four trash cans to those things.

I remember the picture you posted from a couple of years ago where your second floor window was totally snowed in - previous house maybe? I suppose that may be a common occurence though.

Clearly we are all waiting for a new round of second-floor pictures.

Its 1846, all over again. You'll be eyeing the cat pretty soon. Best fatten him up!

The house is actually not very exciting, just your normal looking 3-foot snowstorm. I don't think we'll ever hit big snowpack at the new house, we're 1000' lower and quite a bit further from the crest than the old neighborhood, so the big stuff just doesn't make it to us. Everybody calls our new neighborhood the banana belt of truckee.

But here's the mt rose road they're trying to dig out.

Reminds me of "Katy and the Big Snow"
