| kupackman: | What's this AVS stand for? |

| ebone: | American Vacuum Society. It has nothing to do with keeping a clean home. It's about science--nerdy science. They're in town for a symposium. |

| kupackman: | Oh, that's totally not what I was expecting. I thought it was for some disease (sounds like ALS or MS or something). I googled AVS, and American Vacuum Society did show, as well as several other acronyms. None of them sounded like they would be having a 5k run, though, so I quit looking. I stand corrected.
I bet 99% of the people who hear American Vacuum Society first think about Hoovers and Dysons. I wonder if there is a society for that. |

| Terry: | How about the Vacuum and Sewing Trade Dealers Association (VDTA)?
Or the Association of Home Appliances Manufacturers (AHAM)? (This apparently has subsumed the Vacuum Cleaner Manufacturers Association.) When I was a grad student, the UW hosted a symposium of the Protein Society, which I attended. People thought we were nutritionists but we were actually studying the structure and function of protein molecules. |

| ebone: | You looked up trade associations related to vacuum cleaners ...that is so dreamy, Terry!
Hey, it just occurred to me that Terry and I know a fervently loyal member of the hypothetical alternate (nutritional) Protein Society. |
