The Rochester Orienteering Club will be hosting the Falls Classic at Letchworth State Park on September 16 & 17, 2017. It will be a two day cumulative time event. Day 1 will be on the East side of the park and day 2 will be on the West side. The West map is being updated by Mark Dominie this spring and the East map was updated in 2015. The course setters will be Pavel Korniliev on day 1 and Kathy Bannister on day two. The technical director will be Linda Kohn and the OUSA course consultant will be Jonas Kjall who was the consultant for the 2014 meet at Letchworth. Valerie Meyer will be doing the timing and results.
Those who have visited the park in the past will remember the high wood trestle bridge that spans the gorge. The railroad is in the process of replacing the bridge and this construction has closed the southern entrance to the park for the next couple of years so when you enter West side of the park you will need to use the Castile entrance on the SW side.
The official meet hotel is the Hampton Inn in Henrietta, New York on the south side of Rochester and around 45 minutes from the park. There are many hotels and restaurants in the area in all price ranges. Camping and cabins are available in the park and can now be reserved by going to Reserve America reservations at 1800-456-2267. The park opens reservations nine months in advance so you can go there now and reserve a cabin or a campsite. It is a popular time in the park so best to make reservations well in advance.
A picnic will be offered to everyone on Saturday afternoon following their run to provide a chance to socialize with their friends before they return to Rochester or go to their campsites.
Registration will be opened around March 1, 2017.
Fantastic! Always enjoyable orienteering at Letchworth (and the commute from Hamilton is nice and short). Is there a link somewhere that reviews what the best cabin locations are?
There is a review here that you may find helpful:
A & B are the nicest and near the Castile entrance.
The current availability for these loops for Friday & Saturday (2 nights minimum required) is
A = 0
B = 1
Some B available for the Saturday & Sunday 2 night stay.
Come join us in the lonely, lonely C loop. Everything appears to be available except for the one I reserved. It's actually on Google Street View (as is the A loop and parts of the campground) so you can look at what you're getting.
Registration is now open. Save money by entering early.
