Would the Galileo app be any use? The map is downloaded with reception and then can be viewed without phone reception.

Would I need some kind of hi-tech phonular device for that? The Oregon I use is generally okay and ordinarily I'd check it to see if the map was visible before going out but it wasn't overly important this time so I didn't bother. It has in the past stored up to three maps without issue but the Kalamunda map (which includes Jorgensen, South Ledge, Gungin, Gooseberry Hill and Paulls Valley) and the Langford Park maps I currently have in there are fairly large. I'm going to cut down the Kalamunda map if and when I get a new set of contours from Noel so it won't chew up as much space.

Yes, you need a smartphone - iphone5 or later running ios8, or an Android phone running 4.0.3 (2011) or later versions.

Oh well it was a nice dream while it lasted.
