My best day of XC skiing ever might have been a very snowy day on the ungroomed trails (there are also groomed ones) at Larch Hills, a short drive from Silverstar. Although there's plenty to entertain you without going anywhere else! Have a great time.

We will definitely be exploring outside of SilverStar!

Thank you - I'm ready for a few days of uninterrupted coffee drinking!

I dunno.... :)
I'd say the best days of xc skiing I have had are probably at SilverStar and Sovereign Lakes. No need to go much further than those two connected resort area.

Agreed, I love those trails too but this day at Larch Hills was ridiculous - the XC ski equivalent of CO's ski trip last week. Yes, that's the trail in the middle of the photo.

Bash & CO forget to write in here but Larch was closed for the season :( so I cant even give a fair comparison but judging from your picture, I'll take your word for it.

Between Sovereign and SilverStar, if I had to pick only one (even though technically they could count as one when combined) I'd choose Sovereign solely on the fact that I didn't love crossing paths with the downhillers at Silver Star. A few of the runs forced me to ski with the Downhillers which I found uncomfortable (could just be my current state). Sovereign was groomed with a fine comb and the people were SOOOOO friendly (I saw my retired self in so many people). Anytime I stopped to look at the maps with a look of confusion someone was there to guide me back to where I wanted to be...a few even offered to ski with me (I declined because I was embarrassed with my current breathing situation)

So there you have it - best vacation in a while!

Agreed, I prefer Sovereign for that same reason - scary encounters with downhill skiers at Silverstar. There are lots of trails that avoid them but if you want to climb high, you have to take a few chances mid-season. And Sovereign has XC skiing people and culture, which made us feel more at home, as you did.

We had that fantastic visit to Larch Hills on our first visit to Silverstar in mid-winter but it was closed during our other trips at the start of ski season. Maybe it was just an amazing dream.

Welcome home! Sounds like you had a great time.
