this was one of the middle distance training areas (the one with the monument leaving the main road and all the scarves draped around the trees). The excavations were in a small area sw of the parking continuing along the trail a bit further, around the corner to the right there was a memorial and behind that there were people digging... I saw piles of boots and didn't want to get any closer.
The course was to the east of the trail...

Wow. I had been told that Stalin-era dissidents were buried here, but I had no idea that excavations were taking place at the same time as our training. If i had known, I would have looked.

I remember we drove in to the training area on the dirt road, bordering which were trees covered with embroidered national Ukrainian scarves. Our guide described these as victim rememberance scarves, but she did not mention the excavations. I believe it is the same trees (or scarves) in the background of the photo. I did not see the shoes or graves...
