I think I've ventured into Eastland once in the last decade, on a supermarket stop on the way home from a street-O, and my experience wasn't much more enjoyable than yours - on the one hand I arrived the way the designers intended (in a car), on the other hand finding which doors were actually open at 8.30pm provided an extra challenge.
(At least there was an info map - some malls these days either make you wade through multiple menus on a touchscreen, or even worse, make you download their app).
As a local boy in my youth, no-one willing went to Eastland amongst my acquaintances. Its was text book case of all that can go wrong with mall design. Sounds like it hasn't changed.
The internet is your friend, though I can't understand why there isn't a jeanswest in any of the city shopping malls (which at least are small so easy you escape from and designed for those on public transport)
There used to be Jeans West at the entrance to Melbourne Central on Swanston St!
