I've used ice cubes in a bandanna tied around my neck on really hot days. If you can't find ice cubes, there are also commercial versions of such a system to help keep your cool.

Brisk walking is also a good substitute for running if it's really hot, as Charlie suggests.

also, short acclimatization runs (or power walks). just not when the air quality is bad.

Thanks guys! Not a bad suggestion Janet. I received one of those gel-bead coolers in my goody bag from the last race. I'm putting it in the freezer right now!

And yes Charlie, my walking stride is definitely longer than my 'running' stride. So you're correct; walking would probably be just as fast for me. But somehow, when I begin walking, it feels like I'm giving up.
