Just fast walking. As I said, I can't deal with the funny looks... Two miles to work in the morning and then another two ish in the evening to get to Cambridge. Landing with a straighter knee would be better, I'll see if I can shoot some video and send to you for technique analysis :)
Have you tried deep-water running? I hate swimming, too, and I'm not a big fan of water running, but it has proven to be a very good alternative to running when I'm injured. Of course it depends on the injury, but it might be worth a try. You do need a flotation device to make it work well.
