All part of my plan to beat you at SART :p

(except in reality training here sucks too)

Pink Socks:
Of last year's top 8 at SART, you're the only two registered so far.

Jourdan won't be defending his title, as he's running an ultra in Squamish.

GRennie:
Uh oh, my chances at 4th place may be in jeopardy. I'll see if I can talk the previous champion into it ;)

Pink Socks:
58 spots are accounted for at the moment (40 registered adults, 16 registered juniors, plus 2 spots I'm holding for Abra and Sue (CROC) who asked me before I opened registration (they are in Europe for 5 weeks for Mtb-O champs.

Anyway, the fast dudes so far are: Graeme R, Will E, Ian C, Ben, Eric J, and David B from SAGE, and Thomas L from MNOC.

Fast ladies are Tori B, Julia D, and Siri C. There's a Russian-sounding name from BAOC who's also coming. I don't know her background.

Jourdan, Ian S, Adam W, Eric B, or Peteris haven't signed up yet (or aren't coming). Last year also had two fast-ish guys from California show up (Aron, 7th and Aleksey, 11th).

Yeah, sorry - I'm still Eastern Time Zone despite my quasi-naturalization. I hope you all have a good time, though! It was really nice of you to think of me, though.
Aug 10, 2017 6:52 AM #
Pink Socks:
Ha... I actually wasn't, sorry.

GVOC's Ian Saari won the SART 2015 and was runner-up in 2016. He's the best sprinter that nobody's heard of. [cue Nevin to lament why Team Canada can't get him to join]
Aug 10, 2017 7:32 AM #
Pink Socks:
3x Woods, so we're up to 61 total, including another finalist from last year.
Aug 10, 2017 12:21 PM #
BorisGr:
Out of curiosity, why doesn't that Ian S want to join Team Canada?

Some creatures just can't be tamed and are only happy when flying free. Flitting from adventure to adventure unencumbered with others pedantic expectations.

Ian S is away during SART this year, so he won't be able to go (think a mountain biking trip in Iceland and France). And Boris, not entirely sure but I would guess that he enjoys doing other things like climbing and mountain biking too much and orienteering is more of a for fun, social thing as opposed to something he wants to train seriously for.

Edit: Haha, what Kate said.

+1 Kate

Fair enough. It's not for everyone, that's for sure!

Pink Socks:
This means that we're gonna have a new SART men's champion this year!

Tori B is coming back to defend her title! (Fun fact: SART 2015 had a 2015 WOC sprint medalist show up and win).

Haha awesome, so true. The Hard Man lives that life.

He's the best sprinter that nobody's heard of

With the possible exception of the other sprinter named Ian in Vancouver that nobody's heard of.

Nev-Monster:
I don't even need to lament, already taken care of!

Is IanS the dude that ran in the Super Mario costume at the Sprint Camp?

I think DMan will be there and he will win. Dude is running fast! And in the right direction!
Aug 11, 2017 1:43 AM #
KateK:
Nah the Mario costumed guy was Nathan DB - our (GVOC's) third fast sprint guy :p We seem to collect them haha
Aug 11, 2017 2:35 AM #
GRennie:
It was always my biggest fear that the DMan would start running in the right direction :p (But in yes that's a safe bet if he can make it down)

Glad to see The Hard Man getting the notoriety he deserves ;)

Can someone from Van offer a quick guide to GVOC Sprinter dudes?
Aug 11, 2017 3:11 AM #
Klepperton:
Re: DMan

He sounded like a herd of beasts when he accelerated past me at the spectator control of the COC Long.

I think I heard a humming...as if he was a vehicle.

I was humbled. It was frightening.

Pink Socks:
Just 17 spots left now. Wow, I was expecting a not-great turnout this year because of me being so far behind schedule with things...
Aug 11, 2017 3:29 AM #
GRennie:
Oooh Sure! In no particular order:

Ian Collings, age unknown, Old Man Collings - Past Team Canada track athlete in steeplechase. Ran track at the University of West Virginia. Still has that speed... Will win an un-forked orienteering race without question. 5th at SART 2015, 3rd at Sprint Camp this year.

Ian Saari, 26, The Hard Man - No serious track or Orienteering background but foolishly befriended TNip and accidentally became a star. Runs a sub 35 10k when he has to but generally just runs up the local mountains for fun. He was actually the silver medalist at the sprint at COC's in Calgary last year. Has a habit of leaving any and every award he wins in my car (except edible ones of course)... Skipped Sprint camp to go mountain biking.

Nate Barret, >= 30, NDB - Started Orienteering in costumes in the late 2000's also in an attempt to not be taken seriously. Don't let it fool you. Nate eats Ultra's for breakfast, or used to - he has had bad luck with injuries lately. Don't let that fool you either. Nate's idea of 'taking it easy' is enough to win most local events. Injured for Sprint camp. I remember Will C lamenting how fast Nate was and bugging him to go for WOC after our post-sprint-camp-training-camp one year.

Adam Woods, 25, The Woods Man - You know Adam Woods, Canadian HPP member, 3rd at every SART so far, 'nough said. Known locally for going out too fast in road races. 4th at Sprint Camp.

Graeme Rennie, 26, Grambo - Washed up sprinter? (4th at every SART so far) Though could win if the course is technical.. and in the woods.. and is more like a middle than a sprint... 5th at Sprint Camp.

Honourable Mention:
Mantas Jarusevicius, 26, The Lithuanian Thunder - Past Lithuanian JWOC runner. Comes and goes when he pleases. Fast when he trains, and he has been training... 6th at sprint camp, dislodging the Bone Saw and the owner of this particular AP discussion Big WilliE Stylez.

Ben Smith, 30, Beard Ben (When he has a beard) - Has been running a lot recently. Doesn't move fast over rough ground but can surprise on the roads. 15th at Sprint Camp.

This info is not guaranteed to be accurate...

Nev-Monster:
Outstanding work Graeme, I owe you an IPA.
And Mantas is a badass name.
Aug 11, 2017 12:07 PM #
BorisGr:
Pretty sure there are more fast sprinters in Vancouver than in the U.S.
Aug 11, 2017 12:38 PM #
Canadian:
Or the rest of Canada...
Aug 11, 2017 2:31 PM #
BigWillyStyle:
I always fancied Big Ben rather than Beard Ben but maybe it's too derivative?
Aug 11, 2017 2:41 PM #
BorisGr:
Big Beard Ben?
Aug 11, 2017 3:26 PM #
GRennie:
Aw how did I forget Big Ben!
Thanks Nev
Aug 11, 2017 6:48 PM #
Nev-Monster:
Also, how is Graeme Rennie only 26?

When are the "GVOC versus North America" shirts being printed?
Aug 12, 2017 8:29 AM #
Pink Socks:
OKansas is going to have its first SART participant this year! (just 13 spots left now... whoa)

The Van and Seattle urban / sprint O success needs to replicated in as many big NorAm cities as possible. Wonderful to see.

Who is gonna step up for T dot?

GVOC versus North America

Love it! We need a Jukola of urban O in North America

We need a Jukola of urban O in North America

I'm too busy mapping to really put a lot of thought into this, but what do you envision for logistics? How many legs, how long are they, how big of an area, etc? And then what to do about vehicular traffic and permitting?
Aug 12, 2017 9:07 PM #
iansmith:
I like where this thread is going. Maybe we can enter Vancouver as a third country in the North American Champs?
Aug 12, 2017 9:17 PM #
BigWillyStyle:
GVOC and Cascade will soon secede and form a new Republic of Cascadia. We could hold our own at NAOC (especially after we annex the Yukon for training purposes) - or even Tiomila for that matter.
Aug 12, 2017 9:28 PM #
Hammer:
Ontario could also hold our own. Combining Stars, TOC, DGL and OOC (and the retired Smith clan) is a very strong group of athletes!

@pink

Dunno what the format would be. City chase likely gets permitting approval using this in their waiver

acknowledge that during the Competition, I must obey all applicable laws and regulations, and the directions of Competition Officials and of local authorities.

I understand that there is no set course for the Competition, and that any street on the Competition may be open to regular vehicular traffic.

North American Champs: Canada, US, Cascadia, CSUistan, Trinidad?

Long live the Republic of Cascadia! Loving the annexation of the Yukon idea - that's some leadership level forethought :D
