I tried to descend off Ben Mac to the Lairig Ghru a couple of months ago, and didn't go the best way!! Upon reflection, and map geeking I decided pretty much what you did today! There is a faint track at times, but none of it is pretty!!
I'm keen to do the 4000ers which was the plan for today, but weather not in our favour. Can't decide which way round to do it is best? We basically set a bearing and went for it. Pretty slow going still though. Have you then gone up the other side? Thought the map made it look ok to go straight, but it looked like a wall!!
Think you can go straight down and up Cairn Toul but it's very steep. I took a similar route off Ben Macdui today - it was horrible! Some info here: http://scottishhillrunners.uk/LongDistanceRecords....
- splits are scary. Sounds as if Alec Keith is the expert on the route :-)
Plan was the 4000s!?! I'm beginning to think I was quite lucky on Friday...
I was looking at the route in the Steve Fallon book Scottish hill running and racing (or similar!!) And his route kind of goes diagonally across, so off Ben MCD down the SW sort of shoulder and straight across up to Carn T keeping left of the head walls!!
4000s is on my list too :-)
Hope Midge recovers!!
