I should have remembered this sooner, but it was talk of skins calf compressors that made me think of it.
2013 - my calf went on the 9th May,
various grief in following days... had massage, bougth skins......then.......
I had a very successful Sca Fell Pike Marathon on the 19th

Should also say that I think I did a bit of daily self massage on my calfs, not too hard though.

got it from Run4it going cheap at £30 at the moment

I was probably a bit over zealous initially with it, I've decided 8 medium pressure rolls is enough, I repeat the set of 8 for as many lines up the muscle as seems to cover the entire muscle body
