My mom was on thyroid meds for the rest of her life after having hers removed in the early 1970s (I think). Seemed like a tricky thing to get right.

I still have my thyroid, but it's underactive. I never noticed any symptoms (it came up as an issue after annual-check-up blood work a few years ago), and I would be 100% willing to forgo the Rx, but my doctor told me there could be negative impacts to my heart, etc., if left untreated... Over the years, the dose has increased from 0.005 mg to 0.075 to 0.088 to (most recently) 0.1 -- I think I'd prefer to go back down to 0.088. :-P
