Nice hike. How much of that land is open space? I was playing with mapping the Ski area and the area beyond the slopes looked nice except for the No Trespassing signs.

Some is Canton Land Trust property, and some will be in the distant future. Explore my interactive map here. The No Trespassing signs probably mark the "Perry Remainder" properties (shown in brown), the life estate to which belong to Lans Perry and his siblings. I'm inclined to think Lans would not grant permission for orienteering.

Charlie: what do think of asking Eleanor about including her horse farm in a Sun Wind & Woodland to Mary Conklin Sanctuary playground for orienteering? Nice contiguous area with some interesting topography and features.

Is Lans the fire tower guy?

Lans is indeed the gentleman with the fire tower, and Bill is correct. Lans would be appalled at the suggestion of people orienteering on his property. He gave me oral permission back in about 1994 or 5 to walk or run on his property as long as I didn't bring anyone else from town there, and as long as I didn't complain about anything he was doing on his own property. He never rescinded the permission, but I haven't sought him out to renew it. Better to leave well enough alone. I could ask Elenor and Larry, and they are quite accommodating, but I don't think they would enjoy people actually running around the barns and fields. But maybe for a one time event or a once every year or so event. Mary Conklin would be absolutely fine, SW&W also fine. Barbour Woods probably fine. Just have to work around various properties that belong to Lans.

The Land Trust owns most of the ski runs, but Lans owns and/or controls under a life use agreement most of the forest beyond the ski runs.
