Only an orienteer.... :-) Must have felt a little refreshing?
I once did a trail race (at Thacher) and wanted to pass a crowd so scooted around through the woods at the side of the trail. They expressed outrage that I would go off-trail. The crowded spot was because the dainty ladies were picking their way through a muddy part of the trail (of which there are many at Thacher) and bunched up. I wore O shoes and splashed right by.
That was when I was in better shape and was the only time I beat Benita Zahn, local TV anchor.
When there's mud people usually part and creep along the edges while I plow right down the middle of it. The first time I did a trail race I found this so strange.
I did do a mud run earlier this year (Swamp Creek Stomp), where my O shoes carried me right through the muddy sections. Several folks who didn't have cleats slipped and fell in it. Yay O shoes!
