Well I'm not waiting. I plug in the towns Charlie mentions into Google Maps - Satellite Views. You don't need much more than that to appreciate the vertical nature of the terrain, or the detail of those winding lanes and paths. The whole area appears criscrossed by various paths; wonder if they're hikable?

I like the way they've tunneled the railroad tracks and A18, the major divided highway UNDERNEATH the whole area to preserve the small-village atmosphere. Unfortunately I guess that still hasn't kept those winding mountain roads walkable...cars everywhere according to Charlie. I wonder if there are any towns in Italy where they've banned cars entirely, as they do in many northern European countries?

There are many walkable areas, but the area north of Catania seems to be more difficult than some others. The drivers generally seem to be quite skillful. I am picking up a rental car for two days Saturday, and it will be interesting to see how I do. Last time I drove here was in Liguria and Piemonte. I recall it being a bit challenging. This will be more so.
