We saw plenty yon Lochnagar/Carn an t'Sagairt More round yesterday - plus about 40-50 Ptarmigan in a big flock.

I think my ptarmigan count wasn't quite into double figures. The hares were crazy though!

Last autumn Sarah and I went up Mount Battock and in a bowl near the summit saw about 100-200 hares - the ground was just covered with them, never seen anything like it - not sure if it was a parliament or else a good bit of feeding.

I wondered if the lack of snow this year would mean a good year for eagles and less good for hare and ptarmigan. I feel like the hills have been emptier this summer but clearly not.

Depends where you go - there are some hills in Deeside where you can be almost guaranteed large numbers of Ptarmigan and/or hares - Mount Battock for hares and Card an t'Sagairt Mor or Cairn Toul area for Ptarmigan (at least from my experience
;-)
