Ooooh, you should do that, Coach LD!

Oh yeah - I'm soooo World class with a map!

You are probably the winning-est female mountain bike orienteer in Canada in your age group. Ski-O race courses are not all that different!

There is much in common between MTBO and ski-o --

  • There's a big difference between uphill and downhill.
  • Watch out for rocks.
  • You tend to hit trees when you try to read the map.

:)

You should give it a try! While bushwhacking is a legal route choice, all of the controls are on trails so the navigation is reading a trail map. (OK, a trail map with mazes of little trails, but that's where the fun is. :) I imagine there will be more wide skate trail route choices at Craftsbury than some places, but there still should be enough little trails to get to experience to joy of double-poling along a narrow meter-wide track on skate skis. :)

Oh I've done that - on the maze of trails at Mansfield. I was only an hour and half behind Bash! We've done a couple of Ski-Os at Highlands too. It's fun for sure. But World Masters?!!
It does sound fun - and a good excuse to ski at Craftsbury which I've wanted to try for a while.

Anyone can go - you don't have to be good. :)

She's a great skate skier! I've always wanted to ski at Craftsbury too. Could I do it on classic skis or would that be frowned upon? I know it's not what the good skiers do but I totally suck on skate skis. I won Canadian Masters Ski-O on classic waxless, believe it or not.

I was thinking "good at ski-o" since there were some doubts expressed about World Masters - I have no doubts about coach ld's skiing ability. :) Craftsbury is a great place to ski - if you can stay a few days after the event, you'd be able to fully explore. I expect most of the venue will be embargoed during the races themselves. There's also great skiing at Trapps in Stowe (US Champs were there in 2014).

I think the British woman was on classic skis at the 2015 World Championships in Norway, so it's not unprecedented. :) And she was not a particularly experienced skier, so you'd have a big advantage there.

FYI, early bird fees end Nov 15. You might also want to look into lodging soon, as I've heard that the Craftsbury accommodations are sold out and it is kind of in the middle of nowhere so you may end up having to drive a bit.

So many things to think about all of a sudden!! Where do you suggest looking for a place to stay? Bash just gave me a birthday present: a ski-O map board! So now I feel a lot of pressure to use it.

That map board definitely needs using. :)

The event page has some suggestions for lodging: https://www.craftsbury.com/skiing/ski-orienteering...
I don't have any other knowledge - I think I stayed at a basic little roadside motel in Hardwick (~25 minutes away) the last time I raced at Craftsbury, but I don't remember the name.

I assume you're going, Arthurd?

Ok Bash - guess it's time to start looking for places to stay.

I have to think about whether I'd want to be the laughingstock of a world championship on my classic skis. I wasn't planning to attend but when Arthurd mentioned it, I realized how perfect it would be for you. Maybe Coach Huet should give it a try!

Everyone should give it a try! :) If you have any use for some cards to give out to people who might be interested, I can give some to 'Bent at RtH.

I am going! At least, that's the plan - I need to confirm that my colleagues are willing to cover my classes for a week. The US team affiliated people got in on some beds at Craftsbury last February before everything filled up, so I'm planning to stay there.
