Personally I need longer than 12 minutes to warm up for a hard effort. Apparently it is one of the things that happens with age :-(
In every hill run I've done with youngsters, I've been impressed/horrified by how fast they can start.

I reckon I need nearer 30 minutes than 20 to warm up properly... Add a minute to your warm-up for every year older than 40:-)

I reckon that's a pretty fair assessment. Its particularly apparent in hill races for me. Launching myself up any sort of gradient without certainly 20-30 minutes w/u is one way to guarantee a far from successful or enjoyable time. Trouble is..I don't often do it...

Interesting debate and a few good suggestions for me to try. I think the time taken to warm up as you get older is a major factor, so I'll try and get a longer warm-up in before a race or hard session. I also think my new asthma inhaler has an effect there it seems to wait until I start to suffer then it kicks in rather than prevent it from starting. One for me to discuss with her when I next see her.
