If you were taking my footsteps to #2, you were making a 5-minute error!
From your account, it seems to me you might be making the common mistake of not looking far enough ahead. The map doesn't tell you much about what's right in front of you. It does give you lots of information about what's 200m in front of you. Try looking farther into the forest and picking out (or at least anticipating) larger features as they come.
