Common problem in the cold. It still works with bubbles, but you gotta give it more time to settle.

Yes, but it is only 1/2 year, another 1 1/2. We have Silva compasses that are 15 years old and have traveled with them same places, no bubbles.

Sometimes compasses last years. But sometimes altitude and weather changes kill them quickly. Always have a spare and check before you go to the start that the one you take is working. And get lots of practice navigating in subtle terrain without a compass, so when one does go bad, it's less mentally stressful.
