I don't usually have breakfast before I ride (occasionally have 1/2 a banana), and can't say I've noticed any difference to my spare tyre. On the longer rides though, I'm starting to get hungry after about 50kms. Oh, and there's only H2O in my bottle(s).
Try slamming down the sports drinks during your rides and see if you gain weight.
The article I read didn't say they lost weight, it just said they didn't gain any and 'apparently' they burned dietary fat more efficiently (not sure how this is measured).
