4 '' of snow is perfect for classic skiing - making your own tracks on trails/grass where there are no rocks. I use my waxless in warm changing conditions - waxables only in cold fresh snow conditions. Good and pleasurable strengthening exercise and likely not to aggravate your legs too much.
I'll get there. In hindsight, I should have grabbed the waxless but usually look for opportunity to make skate skiing second nature...one glide at a time. Skate has worked on as little as 2" on grass but colder I guess and with some universal glide wax. And, as you well know, skate on crust is heaven.
