Are you using a Kickr? And are you using MTB or Road?

Yep, Kickr, with a beat up old mtn bike (that could use a new chain, at the very least).

It could have something to do with play in your components (cassette, crank, hub). I’m sure you’ve done a few spindowns with no success. If you have a road bike laying around you should throw it on for a test sometime. If that doesn’t fix it, it’s gotta be a Kickr issue.

No road bikes in our house :)

Yeah, I've done spindowns several times. It says that it calibrates but nothing changes in terms of MPH (and the cadence seems accurate, effort appropriately hard).

I'm sure the bike needs a complete overhaul - it's about 20 years old (I bought it from Bruce Wong a decade ago, and it was pretty well-loved then) and until I put it on the trainer, it hadn't been ridden in 3-4 years. At the very least, I know it needs a new chain, which I think about every time I'm riding and then promptly forget about when I sit down at my computer.

ACTUALLY... I just did a little bit of digging online and found that the kickr isn't compatible with non-11 speed bikes. The other bike (old Surly LHT) I've had issues with on the trainer was also not an 11-speed. My old 29" Salsa, which was 11-speed, worked great. Wonder if it could be as simple as getting a spacer?

That is not actually true. The Kickr is compatible...the cassette just doesn’t match. You need to switch the cassette if you still have the stock one that came with it (and add a spacer).

Bike definitely doesn't have its original cassette anymore, but I'm not sure it has a compatible one. Going to investigate. The thing that tipped me off to that is that I can't shift gears at all when I'm on the bike. There's one configuration that works -
when I try to shift out of that, the chain grinds and jumps around.

Yep that’s definitely the issue. I meant original cassette on the Kickr, sorry. Putting a 10 speed cassette on it will be night and day. Then you’ll have to get Zwift ;)

Didn't even know you could change the cassette on the kickr!
