They still have these around? Amazing! They were on their way out when I was a kid in CH. I remember vacationing in Engelberg which is in the canton "Unterwalden" But Unterwalden really consists of the two half-cantons "Nidwalden" and "Obwalden". The main part of the ski-area was in one of the half cantons, but there was a Poma lift in the other half canton and followed along the boundary, which happen to make several near 90 degree turns. Quite the feat having that poma pulling you around the corners!

When I was a kid, Okemo was all Poma lifts except for one chairlift that I never got to use (upper part of the mountain, trails too hard for me). Although I've been on T-bars since, I don't remember seeing a Poma anywhere else until this weekend. Never saw one that went around curves!

I went on POMA lifts around curves sometime long ago, but don't remember where. Maybe someplace out west? There was a POMA lift at Ski Sundown when I first skied about 40 years ago, but that has been gone a long time.

A poma is still in use at Vail moving skiers along the last slight uphill along a ridge from the back bowls to Eagle’s Nest Lodge. Just a nice straight shot instead a trudge of poling.

I used the pomas at Okemo many times back when the skiing was often wet grass and VT granite before snow making came along. Also used t-bars many times. Even rope toes when those were available. Quite a progression to now only high speed chairs are acceptable, some even heated and with WiFi.

EDIT - Supposed to be tows. D..n spell correct.

Pico has a rope tow (elevation gain 14 feet) but it was not running Sunday. Cochranes has one that I opted against trying about 10 years ago because they were running it at hypersonic speed for the HS ski team kids.
