| Nick: | I would like to gather some info. Our club ( Stars ) might be able to organize a WRE next spring ( medium dist in an area about 1.5 h driving dist. from Niagara and/or 45 min from Toronto ).Definitely to make it a succes we need lots of strong runners ( even better, lots of 'rankable' competitors from all over NA ).
there are 3 possible target dates. my preferred order : A---march 30- 5 days before WRE in Ohio and US sprint and long champs. about 8 hours drive to Ohio from here. B---may 19-the weekend before US trials- about 6-7 hours drive from here for both A and B we could add ( for A a shorter version of urban-adventure run 15 k or so, for B another classic day maybe ) . we also can provide 3 afternoons with sprint races ( for people willing to "training camp' in the area before the other major events and other training opportunities C- possible combined with GHO Nav-Stock event -early June.Your comments will be greatly appreciated |

| ebone: | It is unlikely that I will make the event on any of these dates (limited travel budget), but the weekend of May 19 is least likely due to that typically being the weekend of the always excellent Sage Stomp in the Kamloops, BC area. |

| RichardG: | The is the traditional weekend for the Ottawa Orienteering Club's A-meet. We have a new map for the 2008 event and are hoping to attract many runners from the Toronto and Hamilton area. |

| Nick: | to RichardG . is it the may (option B ) ( I just trying to guess since you do not mention which date ), if so, definitely we do not want to schedule on that date and we'll be happy to travel to Ottawa on that day. please let me know.thx |

| Samantha: | For me right now, neither weekend is better than the other. I have a hard time getting time off of work and it's a long drive for a Friday evening/night, and a long drive home. Flying would be wonderful, but I certainly don't have the funds to do so. So it is something I would consider, and would LOVE to be able to do it (the more orienteering the better) but I can't guarantee I would be able to make it (unless I get fired). |

| Nick: | as we are in planning stages , ideas and suggestions are welcome. normally when i travel to US ( 7 to 9 h) I drive 5-6 hours on friday evening and 1.5 to 2.5h in the morning . and of course we can have one event around noon on saturday to accomodate long distance travellers. |

| the kempster: | So far the last date sounds the best since if i was able to go to Ohio the first weekend in april, which is a pretty long drive, i doubt my dad would want to drive partway there the weekend before and then come back home just to do it all over again. and yes the big meet for ottawa is the may long weekend and i would hate to miss that! |

| feet: | Samantha: just fyi, if you do end up being able to come up with the cash and this event does happen, then flying to Buffalo and getting a ride from there may be cheaper than you think. Both Jet Blue and US Airways fly Boston-Buffalo, so it can be quite cheap when one of them has a sale. (as low as $69+tax each way right now, but I've seen it lower in the past). Flying to Toronto can be three times as much. |
| # Posted 2007-11-23 06:13:16 | |
| Nick: | No.. we won't plan an event when the Ottawa OC will put a big meet. |

| ebuckley: | I probably don't qualify as "strong", but I am a "rankable" runner from a ways off. Taking a full week off to combine with another event wouldn't work for me. Making it part of Nav Stock would definitely get my interest. |

| arcticQn: | I believe i am ranked this year, and I would vote for holding such an event in coordination with NavStock, which Kristoffer and I were planning on attending again this year, (if only to defend our World String-O Sprint Championship title.) |

| dness: | (She means of course the World 3-Legged String-O Sprint Championships). |

| Nick: | looking through IOF WRE calendar, Stars WRE event is listed for March 30,2008.Hope you can make it.
more details about event ( and other events/trainings around that date ) in the weeks to come. |

| jtorranc: | I hope I can make it too - Nick and Hammer are talking up the terrain to good effect. Fortunately, trying to ensure that I can come will supply an incentive to get my current mapping project done before then.
While on the topic of WREs, here's hoping the rest of the expected US WREs in 2008 show up on the IOF calendar soon. It would be a shame if they've fallen at some IOF hurdle. |

| gordhun: | Given the December we have just had will that WRE the end of March be Foot-O or Ski-O? |
| # Posted 2008-01-03 22:01:51 | |
| Nick: | it depends if it snows a lot in late march.. a ski-o will be organized by Stars this month at Mansfield, and it's looking promising- but this is not a WRE Ski-o |
| # Posted 2008-01-04 06:51:56 | |
| Tundra/Desert: | The map scale for the Middle WRE will be 1:7500. The organizing club has provided sufficient reasoning to go forward with this deviation. I am not entirely happy about the deviation, but it is the best option given the terrain. —Vladimir, Event Adviser |

| Nick: | If it is enough interest we would like to offer 2-3 extra sprints (probably part of NA Sprint series -during afternoon hours) ( and 1-2 trainings with or without maps ) in forests west of Toronto. ( maybe starting Saturday march 29 and ending Wednesday April 2 ).
Remember that on April 4th there is another WRE in Ohio ( about 7-8 hours by car from here ). I believe these days aircanada have a seat sale ( ending January 17 ) |
| # Posted 2008-01-10 06:44:49 | |
| Nick: | Some free stuff :

Any Competitors having a minimum of 4000 WRE points -at the time of event -will have free entry as well. | Nick: | Stars Spring WRE got postponed today ( with over 50 cm of snow on the ground 3 weeks before the race, we considered would'nt be fair. to be rescheduled ( probably may 11 or november 8) |
| # Posted 2008-03-10 08:55:48 | |
| AZ: | That's too bad Nick - it must have been a tough call to make. I look forward to the rescheduled event. |
| # Posted 2008-03-10 16:52:22 | |
| Nick: | yeah.. i was wrong - apparently Waterloo region got 40 cm ( 16 in) of snow on saturday. on the ground is probably more like 70 cm. even snowshoes sank (some big cm's ) yesterday at Thomass event |
| # Posted 2008-03-10 19:12:04 | |
| Bash: | Yup, I wore snowshoes in yesterday's race, and my tights had snow on them right up to the waist.
I wonder how much snow they got in Ohio where the Flying Pig is happening in just 4 weeks...? |
| # Posted 2008-03-10 19:47:49 | |
| j-man: | Probably enough to ensure that it is a muddy mess if it melts. |
| # Posted 2008-03-10 20:03:02 | |
| Bash: | Ah, even better piggy photos than usual, then! |
| # Posted 2008-03-11 00:41:48 | |
| cedarcreek: | The map showed that East Fork, the Sunday venue, got 15 inches (38cm).
So...It's liable to get messy. (Actually, though, it was liable to be messy anyway.) |
| # Posted 2008-03-11 00:44:50 | |
| Boojums: | That's good news. I'm getting spoiled with all this sunshine so... bring it on! |
| # Posted 2008-03-13 23:51:24 | |
| Vector: | Moving back to Michigan.... after living in Texas and sunny California, I kinda miss snow in March. |
| # Posted 2008-03-14 07:48:40 | |
| Hammer: | Vector, I was just in East Lansing yesterday (no snow) and earlier today was in the U.P. There is a LOT of snow in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan! |
| # Posted 2008-03-20 18:03:47 | |
| Nick: | new date for Stars Spring WRE.. may 11 !!! no snowhsoes ( hopefully !!) |
| # Posted 2008-03-21 01:41:52 | |
