You've got 6 weeks and 2 days to compress
Which race is it? I’m not even building up for it but I’m excited for you guys!
The illustrious and legendary MEC Race 2 on the surprisingly beautiful Hamilton waterfront. We are running the ten k with the goal of going under 40 minutes. There’s some history there.
I think it was ten years ago, before mark and I knew each other except to recognize one another from orienteering stuff, when we happened to show up for the same race with the same goal - 10k in just under 40. We immediately agreed to run it together. And so it was.
I struggled early and told him to drop me. He refused and dragged me along till the bad patch was over. Later, Mark started to feel rough, and I encouraged him. We both finished under 40 and neither of us felt we’d have made it alone that day. I’ve subsequently taught him everything I know and he’s been in semi-decent shape ever since. During the subsequent decade mark has run a sub 40 ten k every year around his birthday with the plan being to do so until he turns 60. And that is this year.
In six weeks and two days we will try again, together once more. There no question that Mark will do it, and with aplomb. I am more of a question mark. I did take three or four years off of serious training in there, and have had a couple more years with injuries and inconsistencies, but am feeling optimistic that I may be able to do ok if workouts, illness and injury all coalesce correctly.
Cool, I knew that Trav has been working toward this goal for several years and I remember an inspiring soliloquy when he told us how it focused his actions - training, food, etc. Seriously, I really have thought about that a lot and have used it to focus myself.
But I didn't know all THAT history between the two of you. Awesome - all the best in your final weeks of preparation!
It was a defining moment. And Wes took my counsel with two k to go, having delivered me to a point where I knew I was going to be safely under 40, and took off. He made up a minute on me in the 8 minutes of the race.
Super, any chance you're interested in a run post-work Friday 13? A gentle run hopefully.
Possibly Nev. Might have to include some suffering though if we go.
