Adam told me at TA2 that there wasnt supposed to be a darkzone, but they had to put it in as the dam didnt spill the water as they had arranged to overnight (until 6am). Which made the river lower and therefore more dangerous to paddle at night according to Michel the river safety guy

Yes we had heard that too. The dark zone was fine. It was the combination of the two that made the first two days pretty lame. Without the first dark zone to slow us down though we would have got to the second one around midday and been unable to paddle the river until next morning! I thought they maybe introduced the first darkzone to slow us down and stop this happening. It really did seem like they got the timing way wrong on the first stage
