What happened on 3 and 8?

On 3 I left the road too early, let myself get pushed by the green, and misread the trail. Not good. On 8 I have no idea. I remember making that bend around the spur and thinking "wow that was like a 180 but my compass is right so not worth worrying about now." I think the spur looked bigger than what I expected, so I let myself just run along it without glancing at my compass until after I turned.
