Cardinal rule in orienteering households: Never, ever, ever throw out a map
Most of my race maps fit into a two-drawer filing cabinet with hanging folders, but it's getting pretty tight. Might need to throw out stuff from the adjacent cabinet of financial records to make room.
There was a story in an adventure racing forum yesterday about a racer who had sorted through maps from 95 events and was throwing some of them out. It was written in a heartwarming style, talking about his memories from all those years. But all I could think was WTF?!?!? He's throwing out MAPS?!?!?
I found out just in time a few years ago that the Bureau of Meteorology's hydrology section was throwing out its topographic map collection. As a result I've acquired 1:250000 sheets covering probably half of Australia.
Blair, how big of a mosaic have you constructed out of those?!
Most of my maps are sitting in large cardboard storage boxes or in magazine holders. Have to decide on a good way to pack them for the shipping.
