For what it's worth, my doctor recommends iron pills for all her women athletes. I've been taking over-the-counter ferrous sulphate, 300 mg, for years with a Vitamin C to help the absorption of iron from the stomach. Low iron levels run in my family.

I take proferrin, which is heme iron snd easier on the tummy. But I should learn my lesson after all these years and take some all the time... I usually start to think my iron is up and I have an ok diet, I don't need to take this all the time. But yeah, I have often had low iron (or at least ferritin - but I maybe notice that less if it's not also low in the blood). Right now I need to take a lot, and am trying to take ferrous sulphate (100mg) with orange juice as well as proferrin (at different times of the day).

Yes, I felt the same way. Good diet why take iron but I was always border line - couldn't donate blood.

Yeah, I have been rejected for giving blood to be experimented on (too much time in Europe during the 90's - mad cow... Mooo ;).
