In Europe everyone is walking, like you said about your own unlogged habits, to transit, short errands, for fun. I think you are on to something.

Romaine itself would not be the problem, but contamination most likely from farm animals which could be found in any vegetable. But from what i read whole vegetables are better because the pre-cut varieties may trap bacteria in the cuts.
