Shutting down for a bit is a good idea. Take some warm baths and/or apply gentle heat to your quads a few times per day.

I have been using ice and wrapping an ace bandage around my thigh. Is gentle heat something I should add or substitute for icing?

Adding it is ok. I wouldn't substitute. They are both good. Rolling is also good, if you can stand it.
