Certainly for body training variety is a big benefit. Same routine and pattern stops challenging the muscles and they just coast along in a workout that used to seem tough. I like switching back and forth from serious running to xc ski racing with the seasons. Overall fitness is required for both, but they need a shift in the areas of major strength. Also reduces the pounding from repetitive motion. As far as music is concerned, I'll take your word for it -- good luck!
