Yes, the leaderboard is probably correct now although I don’t know if all the passport checks have been completed.

A severe storm hit around 8 pm Friday. It affected different teams in different ways. Teams that were on the water got off as the storm swept in. HQ remained in touch with them via their Yellowbricks. Teams at the start of the paddle were held back earlier than that based on the severe storm alert. It was a stressful situation at HQ and I was outside filming the lead team when the issue arose. A busy HQ staff member with an EMS dispatcher standing at his shoulder told teams held at the paddle TA that they would get a time credit. It was well-intended but once time credits are issued, there is almost never any way to make the race fair for everyone. Time credits for missing gear bins are reasonable (but still difficult to make fair) but bad weather in AR is bad luck. Not to be harsh but it’s really hard to compare and rank the different experiences of teams in different places on the course and solve it with a time credit for a few. It will always feel unfair to someone so it’s best to treat storms as acts of God.

The RD then arrived at HQ and there was a meeting where a cut-off was pushed back and some CPs were cancelled. This allowed more teams to see more of the course.

Post-race a quick decision was made to tie the 4th and 5th place teams rather than attempt to unravel the spaghetti but the 4th place team protested. Meanwhile, other top 10 teams were asking about their time credits, quite justifiably.

The jury was given a very complex situation to address that ultimately involved reviewing the placement/time of 8 teams. Teams downstream of the paddle TA didn’t know about any time credit and raced accordingly, e.g. the 3rd place team had a long nap at the orienteering relay where they would know if their rivals behind them showed up.

Anyway, if it wasn’t before, it’s now burned into my brain that time credits should be offered only in the most exceptional circumstances!

I agree with you!
And RD's should always have that in the back (aka front) of their mindz when designing a course... and putting in dark zones etc

we were not involved but i am just sending a THANK YOU because this kind of stuff is the thankless work involved with directing/supporting an AR. the kind of stuff we racers have no idea is happening but takes many hours and brain cells!

and also as an RD thank you for the reminder that time credits are terrible for all involved. i think pushing back the cut-off is a good alternative!

Thanks, Silkychrome - I know you’ve seen things from both sides and understand this stuff better than most. Congratulations on your great race!
