I did explain the one way things to Patrick beforehand, but I think the point you were allowed to backtrack a few metres for a missed junction sunk in, but the point you weren't allowed to backtrack as a route choice didn't. 3 hours was too much for his old forerunner 10 battery, but there is an incriminating livelox track which makes it as far as that split. He made up for it by doing unnecessary long singletrack bits over the top of the hill next to the start.
Yeah I saw his trace end at the last control and thought his battery must have died. I also figured maybe he was just having some single track fun out there because it seems he took all the single track options even when they were well out of the way!
One way single track is always going to be contentious if someone doesn't understand the symbols or the intention (or where they are). It happened a lot at the Margaret River event back in 2014. I tried to set the routes at last year's KC event so the viable option was to go in the direction the track was flowing.
Yeah, I think a shorter course might have been a better place to explore the singletrack, but he got back with 10 minutes to spare, so must know what he is doing.
Sorry to see numbers are dropping
