sounds like you were forcing things right from the start (getting a time in your head as a target rather than letting the race and terrain dictate pace.
As you say a steep learning curve, but analyse the race, work out what went well and where and how you can improve. Then work out exercises to make these improvements and then implement the changes in your next race.
