| Nikolay: | Hey Roger, how do you measure your calorie expediture per day, and your fat level for that matter, on a daily basis?
Are these estimates from an HR monitor? About the waist "around the widest part" I am even scared measuring that. And by the way I think if your waist have a widest part something is alredy gone wrong :) |

| The Waterboy: | At the new YMCA they have partnered up with multicare health. There monthly special was a resting metabolic rate and body fat tests for $30. The RMB is measured by having you breath into a machine for 10 minutes. I guess it measures the CO2 output to determine how many calories are burned while at rest. The body fat test was electrical resistance. the RMR is close to what i expected based on how i eat and gain weight. I do not plan on having this tested again anytime soon. It just helps me to know how much to eat. I also got some great books on how many calories and fat are in different things. did you know that a cinibon has 1,100 calories?? The old Y I went to has an electrical resistance body fat tester that anybody could use and I checked it periodically. Like i said, the body fat measure is not extremely important nor accurate. After long races being dehydrated has cause it to jump to 25%.
I lost my HR monitor and need to get a new T6 Once you get old like me, and if your genetics are just right, you will tend to accumulate fat around the middle. That is my ultimate struggle. for me, that measurement is the acid test as opposed to the body fat test or overall weight. When i say widest part i mean including those nasty love handles and that muffin top. |

| Nikolay: | Ok I guess I looked at your comments right after you got that test. I have done the electical resistance fat test, but not the resting metabolic rate measurments.
I got just the right genetics to accumulate stuff around the middle :) I just need to get couple of these 1.1 K bombs and not run for a couple of days and I can see the difference. I guess having somewhat high body fat % helps in teh ultra distance events You only need to train to use it instead of the easy stuff (carbs) right. I got couple of years ago in college a functional tests under excercise that tell the VO2Max, fat vs carbs use and blood lactate during and after excercise for bike and for run. It really tells you the right HR at which the fat use for energy drops and carbs increase, and then the aerobic treshold so I got nice three zones (not that I didn't already knew them just from running by monitoring my HR and how I feel) Anyway how many calories is a large peperoni pizza? When we get one, my wife can hardly finish couple of pieces before the pizza is gone. |

| OnYourLeft: | 1900 is what they call your basal calorie expenditure right? so in moving around throughout your day you actually burn more calories than that. as you said that is at rest. |
